The Erinaceus family is often seen as the family of European hedgehogs, but this is not quite correct. These hedgehogs can be found in Europe, the Middle East, parts of Russia and even in China and Korea.

Amur hedgehog

Erinaceus amurensis

This species is native to parts of Russia, China and Korea. It resembles the European hedgehog, but is lighter colored.

Southern white-breasted hedgehog

Erinaceus concolor

The species is found in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia and has an overlapping habitat with the northern white-breasted hedgehog in their northern borders.

European hedgehog

Erinaceus europaeus

This species is the most well-known species on Earth and the first hedgehog that most people think of when they mention hedgehogs. They live all over Europe and are protected in several countries.

Northern white-breasted hedgehog

Erinaceus roumanicus

This species resembles the southern white-breasted hedgehog, but has a much larger natural habitat. They live from Eastern Europe to Central Asia.
